It is reached by the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge from Brooklyn and by three bridges to New Jersey, and the free Staten Island Ferry runs to Manhattan.
It is the only borough not served by the subway, and the Staten Island Railway runs from St. George to Tottenville. About 69.5% of homes were owner-occupied in a 2018 estimate, the highest share of the five. The Greenbelt and other protected areas cover around 12,300 acres of parkland.
